Their common name refers to the large, hard seed that is usually referred to as a ‘stone’. Most cultivated species belong to the genus Prunus. Peaches, apricots, plums and cherries are typical examples of stone fruit crops. They are grown for production in temperate climate areas all over the world. Stone Fruit crops need a period of cold during winter to break dormancy. This is known as the ‘chilling requirement.’
