The term vegetable is somewhat subjective and mostly defined through culinary and cultural tradition. In general, a vegetable is any part of a plant that is consumed by humans as food. It normally excludes other food derived from plants that belong to well-defined group such as fruits, nuts or cereal grains. They are typically herbaceous crops.

The range of crops within this generic name goes from fruits like peppers, beans or tomatoes; to roots like carrots, parsnip or radishes; to leafy plants like kale, lettuce or spinach; or even flowers like artichokes.
